چکیده

We discuss a set of metrics for analyzing human spatial behavior motivated by work in the social sciences; specifically, we investigate individual, attentional, interpersonal, physiological, and organizational factors that contribute to social spacing (proxemics). We then present a pilot study to demonstrate the feasibility of real-time annotation of these spatial behaviors in multi-person social encounters. In particular, we are interested in working with sensor suites that (1) are non-invasive to participants, (2) are readily deployable in a variety of environments—ranging from an instrumented workspace to a mobile robot platform—and (3) do not interfere with the social interaction itself. Finally, we provide an analysis of the performance of the annotation system, and discuss applications and future directions of this work. Keywords-Proxemics; spatial interaction; spatial dynamics; spatial orientation; human-robot interaction; PrimeSensor; Kinect.

Automated Proxemic Feature Extraction and Behavior Recognition: Applications in Human-Robot Interaction

In this work, we discuss a set of feature representations for analyzing human spatial behavior (proxemics) motivated by metrics used in the social sciences. Specifically, we consider individual, physical, and psychophysical factors that contribute to social spacing. We demonstrate the feasibility of autonomous real-time annotation of these proxemic features during a social interaction between t...

Robots Have Needs Too: How and Why People Adapt Their Proxemic Behavior to Improve Robot Social Signal Understanding

Human preferences of distance (proxemics) to a robot significantly impact the performance of the robot’s automated speech and gesture recognition during face-to-face, social human-robot interactions. This work investigated how people respond to a sociable robot based on its performance at different locations. We performed an experiment in which the robot’s ability to understand social signals w...

Robots Have Needs Too: People Adapt Their Proxemic Preferences to Improve Autonomous Robot Recognition of Human Social Signals

An objective of autonomous socially assistive robots is to meet the needs and preferences of human users. However, this can sometimes be at the expense of the robot’s own ability to understand social signals produced by the user. In particular, human preferences of distance (proxemics) to the robot can have significant impact on the performance rates of its automated speech and gesture recognit...
